Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have "resurrected the name McLaren" after their recent performances for the team, believes former world champion Damon Hill.

McLaren reclaimed their perch in Formula One in 2024 after prying the constructors' championship away from Red Bull, helped by the performances of Norris and Piastri.

Norris' win at the last race in Abu Dhabi saw McLaren seal the team title for the first time since 1998, when Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard were behind the wheel.

They finished 14 points clear of second-placed Ferrari last year, but have already built a sizeable gap to the teams around them after just 11 races of the 2025 campaign.

McLaren are already 207 points clear of Ferrari, with Norris and Piastri picking up eight race wins between them so far, with Max Verstappen (two) and George Russell the only other drivers to stand on the top step so far this season.

It shows the remarkable turnaround led by Zak Brown and Andrea Stella at the British team, with McLaren starting to become a mid-table outfit in the constructors' fight until their resurgence midway through 2024.

McLaren are the joint-second-most successful team when looking at constructors' titles (nine, level with Williams), with only Ferrari (16) winning more.

And Hill, who won his only Formula One title with Williams in 1996, believes that it may be some time before any team gets near McLaren with Norris and Piastri in their ranks.

"Yeah, I think it's fantastic what they've done," said Hill in an exclusive interview with Stats Perform.

"They've resurrected the name McLaren, and it's been away a long time, and now it's back to the heady days when they started mopping up, so that was just before I got into F1 and when I was racing they were starting to lose a little bit of their edge.

"They enjoyed some success about the time I finished racing, but then they disappeared and now they're back. So it's a very difficult thing to win in Formula 1.

"A lot of teams have lost grip on things, and they've slid off the map completely. So it's great to see McLaren back."

McLaren have achieved four one-two finishes this season (Austria, Spain, Miami and China), twice as many as they have achieved in the last 14 years (Hungary 2024 and Italy 2021).

They have not achieved five in a single year in the competition since 1998 with Hakkinen and Coulthard (five), and will be looking to equal that total at Silverstone this weekend.

The new documentary, Hill, will be available on Sky and streaming service NOW in July.
