App Review
My Speed
Rating: ***

Amidst a clutter of speed test apps in the market, telecom regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched its own internet speed test app for consumers using Android phones. The app measures real-time internet speeds on both WiFi and mobile networks. Additionally, it has given the option to users to send the internet speed information directly to TRAI.
The app will help TRAI get real-time information about data speeds from an operator in a particular area. What’s best is that the information is sent anonymously; only the network and the location is revealed. Of course, sending the information is voluntary.
The app’s interface is very simple, almost bare-boned, with just basic buttons to begin the test. It immediately identifies the network one is on and also gives a choice of networks to test. The app itself works pretty fast but during the test, there is little information that is given beyond the meter, which shows the internet speed, not the full information about it. The results page identifies the network and shows download and upload speeds, apart from data on network delay (ping) and packet loss. It also identifies the location of the network and shows it on a map once a user allows it to identify the location. Stripped down interface apart, the app works seamlessly and performs better than or at par with apps available for this purpose.
