From Greige Fabrics To Global Bedrooms: The Reinvention Of VTM Limited

For a firm founded in the early years of independent India, this transformation marks the beginning of a new era—one where the fabrics woven by VTM find their place in bedrooms around the world.

In Madurai, a town in southern Tamil Nadu known for its textile heritage, looms have been part of the landscape for generations. Cotton fabrics woven and produced here have travelled across India and beyond for centuries.

Among the companies that emerged from this ecosystem, one stands out-VTM Ltd, a textile manufacturer founded in 1946 that is now attempting a significant strategic transformation.

For most of its history, VTM operated as a specialised weaving mill. The company built capabilities in producing complex woven fabrics such as jacquards, matelassé, leno and dobby constructions—technical segments of the textile industry that require sophisticated machinery and deep manufacturing expertise.

But the global textile industry has undergone a profound shift.

Traditional fabric manufacturing has become increasingly competitive, with producers from Bangladesh, Vietnam and China competing aggressively on cost. For many mills, this has resulted in shrinking margins and limited pricing power.

VTM’s response has been to rethink its position in the value chain.

“The future of textiles lies in moving beyond commodities, it is in embracing sustainability, it is in simplifying yet strengthening supply chains” says Visalakshi Kannan, Director at VTM Ltd and founder and head of the home textiles division.

Over the past several years, the company has expanded into home textiles, producing bedsheets, pillow covers and quilts and other items for global markets.

The shift reflects a broader trend in India’s textile industry. Companies such as Welspun Living and Indo Count have demonstrated how manufacturers can successfully transition into large global bedding suppliers.

For mid-sized companies like VTM, the opportunity lies in carving out specialised niches rather than competing purely on scale.

Sustainability as a Differentiator

Another pillar of VTM’s strategy is sustainability.

Global consumers and retailers are increasingly demanding environmentally responsible textiles. Organic cotton, bamboo fibres and low-impact production processes have become key differentiators in export markets.

“Today, sustainability is not just about branding—it is about long-term relevance,” says Visalakshi Kannan. “Our customers want transparency in supply chains and environmentally responsible products. And they want quality, execution, and speed at scale. Manufacturers who can deliver that will have a strong advantage.”

The company has been developing textiles using alternative fibres and sustainable materials as part of this approach. They are developing fabrics made from pineapple and banana waste fiber.

This shift aligns with broader regulatory and consumer trends in export markets, where environmental standards are becoming increasingly stringent.

The company’s long manufacturing history could prove to be a key advantage.

“Having nearly eight decades of experience in textiles gives us a strong technical foundation,” Visalakshi Kannan says. “Our focus now is to combine that manufacturing expertise with innovation and product development.”

A Broader Industry Transformation

VTM’s journey reflects a larger shift underway in India’s textile industry.

For decades, many Indian companies operated primarily as suppliers to global brands. Today, an increasing number are attempting to move up the value chain—developing finished products, investing in sustainability and building direct consumer connections.

For a firm founded in the early years of independent India, this transformation marks the beginning of a new era—one where the fabrics woven by VTM find their place in bedrooms around the world.
