Actress-producer Arushi Nishank says that, for many women, career is secondary to family. She says that if a woman can make her career and be there for their family, then she should not let go of such a chance.

“Many women often see education and careers as something temporary until family responsibilities come into play. If a career allows them to balance work and taking care of their children, that’s great. However, if not, women tend to prioritise family over their careers. Society often emphasises the importance of mothers being present for their children, while fathers are expected to focus more on providing financially. This leads to a situation where women might only pay attention to their careers when it’s convenient, placing more emphasis on their partner’s career,” she says.

She adds, “The notion that a woman’s support in managing domestic responsibilities is crucial for a man to excel in his career reflects a traditional and gendered perspective on roles within a relationship. While partnership and support in various aspects of life are essential for personal and professional success, it’s important to recognise that success is a shared endeavour between both individuals in a relationship. I believe achieving success is not solely dependent on gender-specific roles or responsibilities. Both partners contribute to each other’s growth and well-being. Mutual support, understanding, and collaboration create a foundation for a healthy and fulfilling relationship where both individuals have the opportunity to thrive and excel in their respective endeavours.”

Places such as daycares make it easier for women to build their careers, says Arushi, adding, “I strongly believe that the accessibility of daycare facilities presents women with valuable opportunities to strike a balance between their careers and motherhood. The evolving societal norms and heightened awareness regarding gender equality have resulted in a more widespread acceptance of women actively pursuing their careers while fulfilling their roles as mothers. Although challenges persist, the availability of easily accessible daycare facilities can play a pivotal role in creating an environment conducive to women excelling in their professional pursuits while successfully managing their responsibilities as mothers.”

Ask her how she feels home and career can be balanced, and she says, “In my opinion, the best way to balance home and career is by finding a rhythm that works for you and your family. Prioritise and set boundaries, identify your priorities and allocate time accordingly. Set boundaries between work and personal life to ensure that you have dedicated time for both. Maintaining an open communication with your partner, family, and colleagues should also be on the priority. Discussing your needs, concerns, and expectations to ensure that everyone is on the same page and can offer support when necessary. We must also remember that achieving a perfect balance may be challenging, but aiming for harmony and flexibility can help create a more fulfilling and sustainable lifestyle.”
