Six days after the assault on the Malayalam actress by a gang, the Kerala police have arrested the main accused in the case.
The accused, Sunil Kumar alias Pulsar Suni was arrested around noon in a highly dramatic scene inside a courtroom in Ernakulam. The police have also arrested Suni's sidekick Vijeesh.
Suni was dragged out from the courtroom by the police when they found him near the court dock. Both Suni and Vijeesh had sneaked into the court room during the lunch break to surrender before the court. Suni had earlier filed an anticipatory bail application through his lawyer.
The 30-year-old actress, who is a leading star in the South Indian film industry, was sexually assaulted in a moving car on Friday night in Ernakulam on her way back from a shooting location in Thrissur. The group of men, who stopped her car after a chase, sexually assaulted her in the moving vehicle.
The criminals allegedly took pictures and videos to blackmail her before letting her go. Though her driver and two more men had been arrested, the mastermind was still at large.
The crime has spotlighted the criminalisation of the state’s film industry, known as Mollywood. The main accused, Sunil alias Pulsar Sunil, reportedly had close links with the industry and the police is investigating the conspiracy angle in the assault.
