Washington Sundar Bowls Best Spell By Indian Spinner In England In Two Decades

Washington Sundar's top-class four-wicket-haul meant England were bowled out for 192, giving India a 193-run target on a Lord's pitch that was playing tricks but was far from unplayable. Sundar's four-wicket haul is now the best spell at Lord's by an Indian spinner since 1974

Washington Sundar bowled a spell to remember in the second innings of the ongoing third India vs England Test match at the Lord's in London. Sundar took four wickets through his off-spin while giving away only 22 runs in his probing 12.1-over spell. He clean bowled all four of his scalps, highlighting his brilliant accuracy over the course of the spell. The spell is the finest by an Indian spinner on English soil since Harbhajan Singh's five-wicket haul at Oval in 2002.

Sundar's top-class four-wicket-haul meant England were bowled out for 192, giving India a 193-run target on a Lord's pitch that was playing tricks but was far from unplayable.

Sundar, whose selection ahead of the second Test had raised a few questions, proved his doubters wrong with his brilliant bowling. Even though he is an off-spinner, Sundar's beat all his four scalps through the ball that went straight after drifting away from their bats.

The first wicket of Sundar was perhaps the most important one in the context of the game. Joe Root was set and batting on 40 when he saw his leg stump dismantled while trying to sweep a Sundar delivery that was seemed to stray down the leg side but kept straight after pitching.

Sundar then cleaned up England captain Ben Stokes who tried to go for a slog sweep and missed the ball which was on stumps completely. The off-spinning all-rounder also accounted for the wickets of the dangerous Jamie Smith and Shoaib Bashir who remains injured.

Sundar's four-wicket haul is now the best spell at Lord's by an Indian spinner since 1974.

Apart from Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj too took a couple of wickets each while Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep got a wicket each.
