Large protests were carried out in Telangana, along with several other parts of the country, on Saturday against the rape and murder of a female veterinary doctor on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Locals even hurled slipper at police personnel near Shadnagar police station following which the cops resorted to lathi-charge to maintain law and order. The protestors demanded the accused be handed over to them.

Shaheen Women Resource and Welfare Association carried out a protest at Charminar against the incident while the National Students' Union of India, too, held a peaceful rally against the "inhumane" incident here.

Some students of government schools had even blocked Hyderabad-Bangalore Highway in protest against the crime. Hundreds of people gathered in each protest.

The West Bengal wing of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morch held a candlelight march in Siliguri against the crime. Protests were also carried out by the Indian Youth Congress in Delhi.

Four people, identified as Mohammad Areef, Jollu Shiva, Jollu Naveen and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu have been arrested in the case and sent to 14-day judicial custody by a Ranga Reddy court on Saturday.

The burnt body of the doctor was found at Shadnagar outskirts in the Telangana's Ranga Reddy district. As per the preliminary probe, the police suspect that the veterinary doctor was sexually assaulted.

On Saturday, three cops were suspended over alleged negligence in filing the FIR in connection with the case.

"Sub-inspector M Ravi Kumar and head constables P Venu Gopal Reddy and A Sathyanarayana Goud were placed under suspension till further orders based on the findings of a detailed enquiry," said Cyberabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar.

He said a detailed enquiry on the dereliction of duty was carried out on Saturday.

The Hyderabad Police played a "negative role" and "wasted precious time" which could have been used to save the life of a veterinarian who was brutally raped and murdered, her family members told the NCW.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) had sent an inquiry committee headed by a member of the panel to look into the alleged rape and murder, which has sparked national outrage.
