Darjeeling’s winding mountain roads are part of the charm, but during peak tourist season, they can turn a short hill journey into an hours-long ordeal. With traffic piling up on the narrow stretch between Kurseong and Darjeeling, the Bengal government is now considering a ropeway that could offer travellers a much faster way to reach the Queen of the Hills.
The proposed Kurseong-Darjeeling ropeway is expected to cover the journey in around 45 minutes, a significant reduction from the four to five hours that the 32-kilometre road stretch can take during busy periods. The project is currently at the feasibility stage, with the state government expected to invite private players to participate in its development.
