On a cold night in June 1893, a young Indian lawyer found himself at a railway station in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. A few hours earlier, he had been travelling first class from Durban to Pretoria with a valid ticket. When a white passenger objected to his presence in the compartment, Gandhi was ordered to move to the van compartment. He refused, and railway officials forcibly removed him from the train.
