Saransh Jain became India’s oldest Test debutant since 1999 at 33 years and 145 days
Robin Singh was the last Indian to debut in Tests after turning 33
Jain also made his international debut before ever playing in the IPL
Saransh Jain walked out in Colombo on Sunday as India’s newest Test cricketer, drafted into the side for the second Test against Sri Lanka after Kuldeep Yadav missed the match due to an infection.
The Madhya Pradesh off-spinning all-rounder had already been knocking on the door through his domestic performances and India A appearances, but his first outing in Indian colours also came with two unusual pieces of history attached to it.
India’s Oldest Test Debutant Since Robin Singh
At 33 years and 145 days, Jain became India’s oldest Test debutant since 1999. The last Indian to make his Test debut after turning 33 was Robin Singh, who was 35 years and 23 days old when he played against Zimbabwe in Harare in 1998. Jain's debut therefore places him in a rare group of late entrants to Indian Test cricket.
It also reflects the route he took to the top. Jain made his first-class debut in the 2014-15 season and gradually built his reputation as a reliable bowling all-rounder for Madhya Pradesh.
His recent numbers made his case increasingly difficult to ignore: he scored 518 runs and took 30 wickets in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, before following it with a standout Duleep Trophy campaign for Central Zone. An unbeaten 70 and six wickets for India A in Sri Lanka further strengthened his credentials before the Test call-up.
International Debut Before An IPL Appearance
There is another interesting twist to Jain's story. He made his international debut without having played in the IPL, joining a small list of Indian players to have reached international cricket before making an IPL appearance.
The list includes Murali Vijay, who made his Test debut against Australia in Nagpur in 2008, and Mohammed Shami, who made his ODI debut against Pakistan in Delhi in 2013.
Jain is now the latest name to take that less-travelled route, making his Test debut against Sri Lanka at the SSC in Colombo in 2026. His journey has been built primarily through red-ball cricket rather than the IPL pathway that has become increasingly common in modern Indian cricket.
