The Chinese are doing rather better, though. Macao was gifted by the Chinese in appreciation of Portuguese naval help in thwarting piracy on the China seas. Even though Macao (like Hong Kong) has recently returned to Chinese sovereignty, Beijing has used the territory intelligently. Macao is now a hub of what the Chinese are promoting as a Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries—Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, East Timor among others.
