India At Tokyo Olympics 2020: PV Sindhu To Fight For Bronze, Women's Hockey Team Enters Quarters - Highlights

Archer Atanu Das lost to Takaharu Furukuma of Japan in 1/8 Eliminations 4-6, while boxer Amit Panghal failed to counter a relentless Yuberjen Martinez of Colombia in his round of 16 bout early Saturday morning in Tokyo.  As the day progressed there was little to cheer with shooters once again struggling. Tejaswini Sawant and Anjum Moudgil failed to make the final of women's 50m rifle 3 positions. Kamalpreet Kaur the set the things rolling  for India after automatically qualifying for the final with a throw of 64m in women's discus throw. The women's hockey team won their last Pool A match against South Africa and by evening progressed to the quarterfinals with Britain defeating Ireland. Shuttler PV Sindhu lost to her old nemesis Tai Tzu-Ying of Chinese Taipei in semi-final match and will now play for bronze on Sunday. Well, Indian shooters continue to disappoint. Anjum Moudgil and Tejaswini Sawant fail to qualify for the final after finishing 15th and 33rd in the 37-shooter field. Moudgil and Sawant shoot 382 and 376 respectively in the standing positions for totals of 1167 and 1154. Earlier, Moudgil shot 390 in kneeling and 395 in prone; while Sawant managed 384 in kneeling and 394 in prone.

With that, Indian women shooters campaign comes to an end.

6:50 AM IST: Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare has been provisionally suspended after a positive test for human growth hormone. She was due to run in the semifinals of the women's 100 meters on Saturday.

This comes after yesterday's drama involving the Unites States mixed relay team, which was reinstated after originally being disqualified. The team had been DQ'd for what officials said was an illegal baton pass between Lynna Irby and Elija Godwin. Team USA appealed and was reinstated and placed directly into the final.

5:22 AM IST: Medals will be decided on 21 events today -- four in swimming, one in archery, three in athletics, one in badminton, one in fencing, one on trampolining, one in judo, one in rugby sevens, two in sailing, two in shooting, one in tennis, one in triathlon, two in weightlifting.

Day 9 of the Tokyo 2020 shooting competition on Saturday will see former world champion Tejaswini Sawant’s Olympic debut alongside the seasoned campaigner Anjum Moudil, who is also making her Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020. The duo are India's top bets in the women’s 50-metre Rifle 3 Positions (kneeling, prone and standing) but they first have to overcome the qualification round. The top 8 in a 38-strong field will play the final round.

While the shooters and Atanu Das can win direct medals on Saturday, Pooja Rani and PV Sindhu can guarantee another two. Sindhu has been in emphatic form and her win against Akane Yamaguchi showed that the Rio 2016 silver medallist wants to change the colour of the medal this time. But Tai Tzu-Ying is a tough customer having beaten Sindhu 13 times in 20 encounters.

Top seed Amit Panghal will start his Tokyo 2020 boxing campaign. Going by current form, Panghal has been fancied to win a medal on his Olympic debut but the Haryana boxer will have to land his punches properly to impress the judges. During the Asian championships in Dubai in June, Panghal had cried foul on the way judges scored his final 52 kg bout with arch-rival Shakhobidin Zoirov.
