Indian model Manushi Chhillar has been crowned Miss World 2017.
Earlier this year, she was crowned Femina Miss India World 2017. She was crowned by the outgoing Miss World Stephanie del Valle of Puerto Rico in the contest that held in China
Chhillar is a medical student, who sacrificed one whole year of her education to participate in the national competition.
She grew up idolising Reita Faria, the first Indian and Asian to win the Miss World crown in 1966.
"In the question and answer round that followed her entry in the top five spots, Chhillar was asked which profession deserved the highest salary and why? She replied: 'I think a mother is of highest respect. I don’t think its just about cash but love and respect she gives to someone. She is the biggest inspiration in my life. Mother should get highest respect,'" reported IANS.
Born to doctor parents, Chhillar studied in St. Thomas School in New Delhi and Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College for Women in Sonepat, reported the news agency.
The runners up are : 1st runner-up – Andrea Meza of Mexico, 2nd runner-up – Stephanie Hill of England
An Indian won the first Miss World title in 1966. Reita Faria, like Chhillar, was a medical student.
Twenty-eight years later, an architecture student, Aishwarya Rai, brought the Miss World crown to Indian in 1994. She then went on to become one of Bollywood’s most successful actors.
Diana Hayden followed Faria and Rai, and brought the crown to India to in 1997. Hayden tried to make a career in Bollywood but didn't find any success.
In 1999, Yukta Mookhey won the ‘Miss World’ title. The very next year, Priyanka Chopra became the Miss World. Then 18-year-old Chopra wanted to become a clinical psychologist, but went on to become, like Rai, one of the most successful actors in Bollywood. She has now made her mark in Hollywood too.
