Tracing The Formidable Brown Landscape of Zanskar

As summer begins, the 14,500-ft Penzila Pass opens to let in Zanskaris who spend the winter outside

Monks gathered to hear Drukchen Rinpoche, the head lama of Hemis, speak at the Photang, on the outskirts of Padum

A small group of men had collected outside the closed door of the Kailash Bar and Restaurant, the only liquor outlet in Padum, Zanskar's largest settlement. "Tashi!", shouted someone. He isn't here. Just then Tashi arrived on a motorcycle. He shook his head. "The stock is over", he said. "I don't know when it will come." The supply of mutton hadn't arrived yet either. "The pass has just opened, and now the DC has to fix the rate before it can be brought here", I was told. The BSNL mobile service had been out of order for over a week, and no one knew when it would be repaired. Most hotels were still closed. And there was electricity for only three hours in the evening. But no one was complaining.
