The first thing that disappears when you dive is sound. The chatter from the boat, the rush of the wind and even the noise of the waves are replaced by the steady rhythm of your own breathing. Below the surface, the familiar coastline takes on an entirely different shape. Coral reefs become landscapes, shipwrecks become landmarks and schools of fish move through the blue like living currents. It is a side of India that most travellers rarely get to experience.

For years, diving in India was largely a niche activity, but that is beginning to change. As underwater experiences become easier to access, more travellers are adding them to their holidays, while some are even beginning to plan their journeys around what lies beneath the surface. India’s coastline, it seems, is starting to offer a different kind of adventure.
