Bangladesh, who won the U-20 event last year, have been clinical in their SAFF U-19 campaign so far. The Bengal Tigers started with a 2-2 draw against the Maldives, but then roared back with a 3-0 win against minnows Bhutan.
Bangladesh’s attacking prowess was on display in the match against Bhutan, with youngster Md Mursed Ali and Sree Sumon Soran scoring within the opening half-hour. Nazmul Huda Faysal got his second goal of the tournament in stoppage time, placing him as the joint second-highest goalscorer in the SAFF U-19 Championship.
Nepal’s journey to the semi-final has been a bit rougher. They started their campaign well, winning 5-0 against Sri Lanka, with four of the goals coming in the second half. However, Urjan Shrestha’s boys could not hold on to that form, suffering a 4-0 hammering against India in their next group game.
Despite the big loss, Nepal still managed to secure the runner-up position in Group B, setting up Friday’s semi-final clash against Bangladesh. The upcoming fixture will be a replay of last year’s SAFF U-20 Championship final, where Bangladesh won with a 4-1 scoreline.
