Covid-19: 157 Cases Of Sub-Variant JN.1 Detected In India; Highest From Kerala, Gujarat

A total of 157 cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been identified in India,  according to the INSACOG’s updated data on Thursday.

Kerala tops the list with 78 cases, followed by Gujarat with 34 cases. The JN.1 sub-variant is a lineage of the Omicron subvariant known as BA.2.86 or Pirola.

Several states are witnessing a rise in COVID cases, and as of now, nine states and Union territories have confirmed the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant. 

According to data from the Union Health Ministry, India recorded 702 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. With this, the country's active caseload stands at 4,097. As per official data, six deaths have been reported in the country in the last 24 hours – two in Maharashtra, and one each in Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, and West Bengal.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has issued guidelines for handling COVID-19 suspected or positive cases in hospitals due to the sudden surge in Coronavirus cases nationwide.

About JN.1 Variant

The JN.1 variant of COVID-19, first identified in Kerala, has seen a total of 109 reported cases in India as of Wednesday, according to sources from the Health Ministry. 

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified JN.1 as a variant of interest, distinguishing it from its parent lineage, BA.2.86. 

However, the global health body emphasised that the overall risk posed by JN.1 remains low based on current evidence.
