Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan has been suspended by the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) following his arrest in connection with a sexual assault case. The development was confirmed by FEFKA general secretary B Unnikrishnan, who stated that the suspension will remain in effect until internal proceedings are completed.
Unnikrishnan explained that the organisation follows a standard protocol in cases involving allegations of sexual misconduct. It was stated that members are suspended pending the outcome of an internal enquiry when such accusations are made.
The complaint was lodged at the Vanitha Police Station, following which an FIR was registered. It has been reported that the case includes charges under multiple non-bailable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These sections relate to assault or criminal force with intent to outrage modesty, sexual harassment, and use of words or gestures intended to insult a woman’s modesty.
Following his arrest, Ranjith was produced before a magistrate and was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. He is currently being held at the Ernakulam Sub Jail.
Investigation underway
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted under the Kochi City Police Commissioner to probe the case. It has been stated that the team will examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and record statements from individuals present at the shooting location.
The case has drawn attention within the Malayalam film industry, with FEFKA’s action signalling adherence to its internal disciplinary framework.
