  • Norway's inspiring FIFA World Cup journey ended with a 1-2 defeat against England, but they exceeded expectations by making it to their maiden quarterfinals

  • Erling Haaland led Norway's historic campaign and scored seven goals, including a brace against six-time champions Brazil in the round of 16

  • Apart from his performance, Haaland also became a cult figure among fans with his iconic Viking celebrations

Norway's dream run at the FIFA World Cup 2026 came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday as England fought back to claim a 2-1 victory at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Ranked 31st in the world before the tournament, the Landslaget were the lowest-ranked side among the eight quarter-finalists but exceeded expectations with a historic run to the last eight.

England entered the contest as favourites, boasting a star-studded squad led by Harry Kane. Yet it was Erling Haaland who made the football world believe Norway could pull off another upset against the 1966 world champions.

Although England successfully contained Haaland and recovered from a goal down to book their place in the semifinals, the striker's inspirational performances throughout the tournament helped Norway reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in their history, leaving an enduring legacy in Norwegian football.

Haaland's 16 goals in UEFA qualifying became a catalyst for Norway's entry in the FIFA World Cup after a gap of 28 years. The Man City forward then scored seven goals in four games before the quarterfinal which includes one in Norway's first-ever victory in World Cup knockouts against Ivory Coast and a double in a famous round of 16 win against six-time champions Brazil.

While the likes of Messi and Mbappe top the charts with 8 goals each but unlike them Haaland doesn't have the support of other stars around them which tells about the hype around his performance this time around.

Haaland's Ruthless Finishing Sets Him Apart

According to ESPN, Haaland (25 times) has touched the ball the least amount of time of the other three stars - Lionel Messi (67), Harry Kane (25.4), and Kylian Mbappe (49.2 before the France vs Morocco match), who have scored six or more goals in this World Cup. Also, Haaland's touches per goal average is 14.3, far less than Kane (21.1), Mbappe (35.1), and Messi (41.9).

Also, Haaland has bettered his competitors in expected goal (xG) value in this World Cup. He has an xG of 4.4 and just 12 shots on target, while his finishing has been more clinical than that of Harry Kane, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé, according to ESPN Global Sports Research.

Haaland's Rowing Celebration Wins Fans Beyond The Pitch

Erling Haaland not only captivated fans with his exploits on the pitch, but also turned his signature rowing celebration into a fan favourite. The celebration became so popular that Google even introduced a special Easter egg: searching for "Haaland" triggers an animation of a group performing the Viking row across the screen to the beat of a drum.

Whether it were the stunning goals of Haaland or his signature rowing celebration, Norway have been able to leave an indelible mark in the tournament.
