  • His British citizenship had briefly raised hopes of an IPL entry after he registered for the Afghanistan Premier League draft as a UK national

Mohammad Amir has decided not to register for the IPL 2027 auction, shutting down talk that his British citizenship could open a path into the league. Amir confirmed the move in a message from Dubai.

“No, I’m not [registering for the auction],” Amir told AP in a message from Dubai.

The decision matters because Amir’s British citizenship had briefly put him in the frame to become one of the few former Pakistan internationals to feature in the IPL. The former left-arm fast bowler remains active in T20 franchise cricket, but an IPL stint is not on his immediate agenda.

Auction Speculation Ends

The buzz had built quickly. Amir registered for the Afghanistan Premier League draft as a UK national, which triggered fresh talk over whether he could enter the IPL auction pool.

The 34-year-old appears in the Platinum bracket. Pakistan is listed as his country of residence.

That combination had fuelled interest around a possible IPL move. His latest call ends that immediate speculation over participation in the 2027 auction, even as he continues to look at franchise opportunities elsewhere.

British Citizenship Impact

A career shift began in May 2026. Amir acquired British citizenship and opened a new route in franchise cricket.

He then turned out in the T20 Blast for Nottinghamshire’s Notts Outlaws as a domestic player. He also featured in The Hundred for Trent Rockets without taking up an overseas slot.

His new status has broadened his choices. Amir has also confirmed he will go back to the Pakistan Super League next year as a foreign player. He had earlier said he would feature in the 2027 PSL as an overseas player after changing his citizenship.

Career And Comparisons

Amir retired from international cricket in 2024. He finished with 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 62 T20Is for Pakistan.

He was part of Pakistan’s 2009 T20 World Cup-winning team. He also played a key role in the side’s Champions Trophy triumph in 2017.

His British citizenship has drawn comparisons with former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood. After getting a British passport, Mahmood represented Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL between 2012 and 2015. Amir, though, has chosen not to pursue that route for now.
