  • The Prime Minister took the viral mishap in good humour while playing alongside local youth and West Indies greats

Even prime ministers can’t dodge a banana-skin moment. Andy Burnham lost his footing while running between the wickets in a friendly cricket match in Antigua and Barbuda, and the video quickly went viral. It was a fun moment, if a slightly red-faced one for the PM.

Burnham had flown to the Caribbean for serious business. At the two-day Commonwealth summit, he is holding talks with other leaders about whether Britain should apologise for its role in the slave trade. The cricket was a break from those weighty discussions.

Cricket is a natural way to win hearts in this part of the world, and Burnham went all in. He turned up in an England cricket top, black jeans and trainers. The exhibition match featured local youth talent and West Indies greats, including Sir Vivian Richards. Few places on earth take the game more seriously, and Burnham looked keen to show he could play.

Then came the moment. He pushed the ball into the on side and set off for a run. Halfway down the pitch he realised he’d never make it and tried to turn back. His trainers slipped, and the Prime Minister went tumbling to the turf. When he got back to his mark, a Downing Street videographer ran over to refit the microphone that had fallen off in the fall.

Burnham took it in good humour, and the crowd loved it. It was a reminder that in cricket, even the Prime Minister can get run out by his own footwear.
