Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has taken a serious view of the events in Tamil Nadu and condemned the manner in which former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and others have been arrsted by police early this morning.
Vajpayee has conveyed his strong reaction to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha about the arrest, a PMO spokesman said here.
The Prime Minister has been trying to contact Jayalalitha after their arrest, he said.
Vajpayee spoke to Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary P. Shankar and told him about his strong reaction on the issue. The Prime Minister asked him to send a detailed report and keep him informed about the latest developments.
He also spoke to Union Industry Minister Murasoli Maran, who has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Apollo hospital after he sustained injuries in the scuffle that took place during the Karunanidhi's arrest.
Union Minister for Environment and Forests T.R. Balu contacted the Prime Minister around 4 a.m. and gave him all details. (PTI)
