The mid-size hatchback segment boasts of models such as the Maruti Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Ford Figo and the Ford Freestyle. The Grand i10 Nios is the freshest model here and was recently launched in a price range of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). But how does it fare against its rivals in terms of cabin space?
Let’s take a look at the exterior dimensions of these hatchbacks first:
Dimensions
The Freestyle is the longest hatchback of the segment and shares its platform and wheelbase with the Figo. Both these Ford offerings have the least boot space among the four cars.
Measuring 268 litres, the Swift boasts of the largest boot space.
The Grand i10 Nios is smaller than the other three in all exterior measurements.
In case of wheelbase length, the Swift and the Grand i10 Nios measure the same.

Front-row Space
The Figo has the maximum legroom among all the mid-size hatchbacks.
In terms of kneeroom too, the Figo has the most to offer and by a big margin.
However, taller people will find the Ford Freestyle more comfortable due to its maximum headroom.
The Ford Figo’s front seat bases are longer and wider than the rivals but the Freestyle offers maximum height.
At 1375mm, Figo also has the widest cabin up front.
Overall, Figo is the roomiest mid-size hatchback in terms of front row seating.
Second-row Space
The Figo offers the maximum shoulder room of the four which would be handy to seat three adults in the back.
Both, the Grand i10 Nios and the Figo have the most headroom at the rear.
In terms of rear kneeroom, the Figo takes the first place by a huge margin again.
However, the rear bench in the Swift has the maximum width, accommodating three adults comfortably.

Pricing
The Grand i10 Nios is the cheapest offering of this segment.
Except for the Freestyle, all the other cars get the option of an automatic transmission.
However, the Swift and the Grand i10 Nios come with an AMT gearbox whereas the Figo gets a more sophisticated AT option.
The Swift and the Grand i10 Nios get the smallest engines in terms of engine displacement among all the offerings of the segment.
Both the Ford offerings share the same 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is the biggest among the four models.
