India captain Shubman Gill has well and truly silenced his doubters with a stellar run of form in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. Coming into the tour with question marks over his consistency — especially in English conditions where he averaged a modest 14.66 — Gill has defied expectations, notching up consecutive centuries to etch his name alongside some of India’s greatest Test leaders.

With his latest century at Edgbaston, Gill became only the fourth Indian captain to register hundreds in back-to-back Tests in England, joining the likes of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli.

His ton was also his third consecutive Test century, including his century at Dharamsala last year, showcasing a level of maturity and composure that has lifted India in challenging conditions. Remarkably, Gill has now matched Mohammad Azharuddin’s record of two centuries as captain in England, both scored in successive Tests.

The 25-year-old’s 16th international century also saw him surpass MS Dhoni’s tally of 15 tons across formats, underlining Gill’s rapid rise as one of India’s premier batters on the global stage. His innings at Edgbaston wasn’t just about personal milestones — it came at a time when India needed stability the most.

After Yashasvi Jaiswal’s impressive 87 at the top, Gill anchored the innings with great patience, especially as wickets tumbled around him. His partnership with Rishabh Pant looked promising before the vice-captain fell for 25, leaving Gill to rebuild once more.

By stumps, Gill had found an able partner in Ravindra Jadeja, with the duo adding valuable runs to guide India towards a position of strength. Jadeja, who had faced criticism for his recent batting performances, remained unbeaten on 41, playing with composure and intent.
