South Korean actor Gong Yoo gets justice in a defamation case. A woman who falsely accused the Squid Game actor of harassment was found guilty of defamation, and has been sentenced to six months in prison by the Daejeon District Court.
Gong Yoo cleared of harassment allegations
A report in Allkpop states that on July 29, the Daejeon District Court’s Criminal Division 5 sentenced the woman identified only as 'A', to six months in prison, and suspended for two years of probation. The woman, who is in her 40s, is found guilty of spreading false information and violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilisation and Information Protection.
The court stated, "The claims made by A are completely groundless and, beyond that, she repeatedly spread false information over a long period."
"Even though the victim is a public figure and naturally subject to public attention, the nature of the crime is very serious," the court stated further.
The woman was found of having criminal history. "Although the defendant has two prior convictions for similar offenses, her acknowledgment of the crime and her intention to receive treatment at a hospital were taken into account in sentencing," the court said.
Gong Yoo harassment controversy
As per reports in Korean media, between January 2020 and March 2021, the woman posted 235 defamatory statements online where she accused the Train to Busan actor of allegedly threatening and harassing her. During a live broadcast by Gong Yoo in January 2020, the woman commented, "I’m being threatened from behind, and there isn’t a single day I haven’t been threatened." She also claimed, "He torments me to the point of neurosis."
After an investigation, authorities found that Gong Yoo had no personal connection with the woman and all her claims were found to be fabricated.
Gong Yoo is yet to comment on winning the case.
