Greetings and welcome to everyone joining us this Thursday evening. We are back with another football blog, and this time is the Europa League matchday 3 face-off between Feyenoord and Panathinaikos. Stay with us for the build-up and live updates.
The match starts at 8pm IST. Select matches of the UEFA Europa League are being live streamed on the Sony LIV app and website in India, and telecast on the Sony Sports Network TV channels in the country. In Netherlands, the Feyenoord vs Panathinaikos game will be shown on Ziggo Sport and in Greece on ANT1+ and Cosmote Sports 3 HD.
The match was originally scheduled to kick off at 10:15pm IST, but it was brought forward to 8pm IST due to severe weather warnings. Authorities requested the change after forecasters issued a Code Orange alert for strong winds exceeding 100 km/h, the Rotterdam-based Feyenoord said. UEFA and Feyenoord agreed the game could only proceed with the earlier start.
The two teams have met twice previously in a competitive setting, during the European Cup 1984-85. The first leg in the Netherlands ended in a 0-0 draw, followed by a 2-1 win for Panathinaikos in the return leg.
An updated adverse weather forecast has led to the match now being pushed back. Storm threat means the kick-off time has changed from 8pm IST, which itself was an update on the original 10:15pm schedule, to 12:30am IST.
Over in the UEFA Champions League, Arne Slot explained that Alexander Isak was withdrawn at half-time of Liverpool's comprehensive 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt due to a groin injury. The big-money transfer window signing from Newcastle United was selected in the starting XI alongside fellow new arrival Hugo Ekitike.
However, Isak was replaced at the interval by Federico Chiesa, and Reds boss Slot did not say whether he would be fit to face Brentford this weekend.
Lionel Messi has finally agreed to a new contract with Inter Miami, a deal that required several months to complete and ensures that the sport’s megastar will be with the Major League Soccer club for its planned move into a new stadium in 2026. Inter Miami said it was a three-year deal through 2028.
The deal was announced one day before Inter Miami’s playoff opener against Nashville. Messi’s team — the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference — will play host to Game 1 of that best-of-three series on Saturday.
Felipe Mora scored two first-half goals, defender Kamal Miller added another in the 82nd minute and the Portland Timbers beat Real Salt Lake 3-1 in a wild-card Major League Soccer match. Portland advanced to play Western Conference regular-season champion San Diego in a best-of-three first-round playoff series.
Speaking of the Europa League itself, as many as eight matchday 3 games have kicked off across venues at 10:15pm IST, featuring the likes of Aston Villa, Lyon and Rangers. In another notable clash, Fenerbahce are hosting VfB Stuttgart in Istanbul.
Lennart Karl made Champions League history as Bayern Munich powered to their third straight victory with a 4-0 hammering of Club Brugge. The Bundesliga champions celebrated head coach Vincent Kompany's contract extension in style, having never looked back from Karl's brilliant fifth-minute opener on Wednesday.
Teenager Karl netted his first goal on his maiden start in the competition. In doing so, Karl became Bayern's youngest goalscorer in the Champions League and also the youngest German scorer in the competition, aged only 17 years and 242 days.
Among the 12:30am kick-offs, Nottingham Forest are hosting Porto at the City Ground and Maccabi Tel Aviv welcome Midtjylland at Bloomfield Yafo in Israel. Outlook India is covering both the games live.
This is how Feyenoord line up for tonight's clash:
And here is Panathinaikos' line-up for the Europa League face-off against Feyenoord:
After three timing changes, the match finally kicks off in Rotterdam amid windy conditions. Feyenoord kicking from left to right and Panathinaikos the other way in the first half. The atmosphere is superb in the stadium, despite the storm warning in the lead-up.
Sem Steijn moves really well to reach the Panathinaikos goalmouth, and slots it past custodian Bartlomiej Dragowski in the 10th minute to wheel off in celebration. But the Feyenoord captain has to cut the exultation short as the offside flag goes up immediately, and the goal does not stand.
Panathinaikos take the lead in the 18th minute! Karol Swiderski continues his golden run as he slams home the rebound after Georgios Kyriakopoulos' shot is punched off his line by Timon Wellenreuther. The Polish striker has now netted three goals in as many Europa League games.
A 34th-minute penalty from Kerem Akturkoglu was enough to take Fenerbahce to a 1-0 win on matchday 3 afainst VfB Stuttgart. The Turkish club earned its first win over a German team in 13 years, and only the second in its history. On the other hand, Stuttgart slumped to their second straight loss in the Europa League.
We are drawing closer to the end of the first half and Feyenoord are building the pressure near the Panathinaikos box, trying to equalize before the break. But they haven't found that cutting edge yet, and coach Robin van Persie appears to be a concerned man at the sidelines.
It's an exhilarating end to the first half as the 19-year-old Givairo Read responds beautifully to Aymen Sliti's cross, drilling it into the far corner to score at the fag end of stoppage time and draw Feyenoord level, going into the lemon break.
The players return from the mid-game interval and the second half gets underway. Feyenoord now attacking from right to left and Panathinaikos the other way.
And now Feyenoord are in the lead! Aymen Slit now crosses it for Anis Hadj Moussa, who shoots it in from his left foot to beat the Panathinaikos goalie in the 55th minute. The hosts have come from 0-1 down to 2-1 up and it is their game to lose now.
Feyenoord very nearly earn a penalty for handball in the 68th minute but the referee, after asking for VAR, heads over to the monitor and rules there will be no spot kick. Panathinaikos finding it hard to eke out openings at this stage, and a third goal from the hosts is looking more likely than an equaliser from the Greek club at this stage.
Feyenoord score a third in the 90th minute! Gijs Smal's cross is met by Cyle Larin in the Panathinaikos, and though he misses his swing the first time, the Canadian has the time and presence of mind to try again and slot it in. That surely seals the hosts' win, even as five minutes of stoppage time are added.
And that's that. The full-time whistle is blown and Feyenoord emerge 3-1 victors against Panathinaikos, earning their first win of the Europa League 2025-26 campaign and a resounding one at that. Panathinaikos, on the other hand, slump to their second loss in three group-stage games.
