Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are playing their opening match of the Indian Premier League 2026 against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Ekana International Stadium on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
DC won the toss and invited LSG to bat first on a red soil wicket. Super Giants made a surprise change as they opened with skipper Rishabh Pant along with Mitchell Marsh.
However, this decision came as a surprise to many as LSG is known for their destructive opening pair of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram, and disrupting a well-settled combination at the top seemed a strange choice.
Unfortunately, this decision didn't pay dividends for LSG as Pant got out in one of the most unfortunate manners in cricket. Mitchell Marsh played a straight shot off Mukesh Kumar, but the ball touched the bowler's fingers and ricocheted to the stumps, resulting in Pant getting run out for 7 off 9 balls.
Rishabh Pant didn't have a good season last year, and huge things were expected from the southpaw batter this year around, given the enormous talent and price tag associated with him.
Pant started well with a beautiful on-drive against Mukesh Kumar in the first over, but was dismissed freakishly. Both teams haven't been able to win the trophy even once and would want to start their campaign with a win.
