Delhi Capitals defeated defending champions Chennai Super Kings by 20 runs to register their first victory in IPL 2024 on Sunday. Chasing a 192-run target, CSK were rattled by pacers Khaleel Ahmed (2/21) and Mukesh Kumar (3/21), and ended up at 171 for six. Ajinkya Rahane (45, 30b), Daryl Mitchell (34, 26b) and MS Dhoni (37 not out, 16b) tried their best but DC bowlers were on the money this night. Earlier, strong fifties by captain Rishabh Pant and veteran opener David Warner led Delhi Capitals to 191 for five. Pant (51, 32 balls) and Warner (52, 35 balls) found good support from opener Prithvi Shaw (43, 27 balls). It was Pant's first fifty in this IPL. Pacer Matheesha Pathirana (3/31) was the most successful bowler for CSK. DC missed the services of left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav because of a niggle. "We had a couple of chats about our cricket and the consensus out of those meetings is that we have played some really good and bad cricket. So, we need to find somewhere in the middle where we can play consistently good cricket over 40 overs" - Ricky Ponting on DC's season so far.

Vizag track is known to be providing assistance to the spinners and with DC and CSK boasting some, could toss come into play tonight? Wait and watch.

The climatic conditions look really good for a game of cricket. Nice gentle breeze blowing across the ground and we are playing on pitch number 4, which is bang in the middle. 62m either side of the wicket, and 71m down the ground. There is an even covering of grass on the pitch, the root structure looks good which keeps the soil together, so don’t expect a lot of turn. This pitch seems to be very good for batting. Average first innings score in previous games has been 157, but that was 2019 and before so that is a bit outdated. I think the average first innings score now should be around 175-180. Bowlers need to choose the right options - the early trend has been to be back of a length with pace on and pace off, and don’t forget your cutters. It seems like a bat first wicket - Rohan Gavaskar and Darren Ganga say on-air.

First game here, not too much information on this pitch. Let's see how it goes. The plan remains the same, keep things simple and try to win those individual moments, individual battles. No changes for us, going with the same squad. (On captaincy) I've done it for my state side, and for India as well at age group level, plus I have a few experienced guys to help me out.

"We'll bat first. Wicket looks good, we want to use it as a batting track, put runs on the board. (On playing home games in Vizag) I think it makes a lot of difference, but we practiced here. We came here and got 10 days at this wicket. Two changes - Kuldeep had a niggle, Prithvi Shaw comes in. Ricky Bhui is out, Ishant Sharma comes in."

DC openers are at the crease as action gets underway in Vizag.

Delhi Capitals' openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw have given their side a rapid start at Vizag. Warner, in particular, has looked more solid and has scored 30 runs that include 2 sixes.

DC - 42/0 (5 Overs)

CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad finds himself under immense pressure for the first time this season as DC openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw are going full throttle against his bowlers. How would he react? Captain Cool 2.0?

David Warner was dismissed for 52 after giving his side a brilliant start against CSK. Delhi Capitals' openers gave them a blistering start as Chennai bowlers found themselves on the back-foot in Vizag. Warner was dismissed by Mustafizur in the 10th over.

DC - 95/1 (10 Overs)

After a strong foundation laid by David Warner and Prithvi Shaw, DC lost their way a bit in the middle-overs. Mitchell Marsh and Tristan Stubbs were dismissed in an over by CSK pacer Matheesha Pathirana leaving Capitals four down.

DC - 134/4 (15 Overs)

Delhi Capitals end their innings on 191 for the loss of five wickets. Rishabh Pant and David Warner scored respective fifties to take the DC side to an improbable position. For Chennai Super Kings, Matheesha Pathirana was the pick of the bowlers with 3/31.

Probably what we have got is ideal, but 200 would have been fantastic. We lost two wickets in the middle and the way Rishabh came out and played was phenomenal. He (Prithvi) has been working very hard, to see him hit cleanly was fantastic. Hard lengths into the wicket and off pace stuck and held on the pitch. We got to hit the stumps as much as we can and get the fields right and make sure we bowl to that.

CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed early on by Khaleel Ahmed to give DC a rousing start.

Chennai Super Kings were hauled back by seamer Khaleel Ahmed when he removed Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad. DC were well on top and will be looking to add more scalps as they look for a first win in the IPL 2024.

After a disastrous first five overs, CSK have fought back nicely with Daryl Mitchell and Ajinkya Rahane. The reigning champions need 117 runs in the final ten overs to win this encounter.

CSK - 75/2  (10 Overs)

With five wickets down, CSK need 79 to win in the last five overs if they have to win this encounter. DC are right on top in this game and few more scalps, could well give them the game.

CSK 113/5 (15 Overs)

CSK batters have been sussed out by the brilliant Delhi Capitals' bowlers despite the former boasting some top power-hitters in their ranks.

What a win for Delhi Capitals, their first in the IPL 2024. Chennai Super Kings have been beaten fair and square at Vizag despite MS Dhoni's late fireworks. Mukesh Kumar (3/21) and Khaleel Ahmed (2/21) were the key contributors for DC in their victory over the reigning champions.

DC - 191/5 (20)

CSK - 171/6 (20)

"Bowlers have been clinical today. We've learnt from our mistake. He's been working hard from last two weeks (Shaw). We thought it's time to give him a chance and he flourished. It will depend on match to match, but if Mukesh can bowl at the death it'll be great. As a cricketer I've to give my 100 percent. Took some time initially as I haven't played much cricket in the last 1.5 years. This is something I've depended my life on. Always had the self-belief that whatever happens, it's important to come back to the ground."

I think I was pretty much happy with the way they (bowlers) came back after the start (powerplay). Restricting them to 191 was a good effort. The pitch was on the better side in the first innings. Second innings there was extra seam movement and spongy bounce. I felt he (Rachin) was missing it by a big margin. We couldn't get going in the first three overs and that was the difference. At the halfway stage it was getable. There was extra seam movement and we couldn't capitalize and we were always behind. We didn't get the big over to reduce the run rate. Not really (if an extra bowler in the line up with help in powerplay). Deepak is always used to bowling 3 overs. Even though the first four overs were good, the last two overs were expensive. After two good games you can expect the third game to go below par and that's nothing to worry about. Just two or three hits here and there, in the field if we had stopped one or two boundaries it could have been different.

Have worked hard in the domestic season. Played a lot of matches in the last six months which has helped me know my game better. Love it when the ball swings and the batters get beaten. Have tried to figure out how I can keep myself fit. Red-ball game teaches you a lot about how the ball is coming out of the hand. Ultimate goal is to play for India.

What a win for DC and Rishabh Pant! Finally they have a victory in this IPL 2024. Till then, good night.
