Banaras' Nagari Pracharini Sabha Celebrates Its 134th Anniversary

Twenty-four monsoons ago, as a student of Banaras Hindu University, I spent long afternoons reading Pankaj Mishra's The Romantics. Few books understand Banaras as intimately. It is a city where the past is never merely remembered; it lingers in temples, libraries and narrow lanes. Few places embodied that weight more than the Nagari Pracharini Sabha.

From July 15 to 18, 2026, this venerable institution celebrated its 134th varshikotsav, drawing writers, scholars, artists, musicians, filmmakers and students back into a space many had begun to think of as a relic. Founded in 1893 by three idealistic students of Queen's College, Shyam Sundar Das, Ramnarayan Mishra and Shivkumar Singh, the Sabha grew into one of the defining institutions of modern Hindi. It championed the Devanagari script, preserved invaluable manuscripts, nurtured scholars and produced publications that profoundly influenced the evolution of Hindi language and literature. Yet, over the years, silence overtook the institution. Walking past its gates in Visheshwarganj became an exercise in melancholy. The grand facade remained, but the conversations had ended.

The institution’s 134th varshikotsav has scripted a new story. As the monsoon descended on Banaras this July, inside the Sabha's historic premises, a remarkable renewal was taking shape.

The celebrations opened with a symbolic padyatra to Queen's College, retracing the institution's origins. The following day, Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh, Acharya Mithilesh Nandini Sharan, Ram Bahadur Rai, Hemant Sharma and professor Kripashankar Chaubey formally inaugurated the festival.

Beyond the ceremonies, the Arya Bhasha Pustakalaya became the centre of activity. Visitors moved through ‘Sanshodhak, Sanvardhak, Sampadak’, an exhibition celebrating Acharya Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi, and ‘Sabha-Prasang’, which chronicled the institution's remarkable journey using rare photographs, manuscripts and archival material.

To attend the celebration, elderly scholars returned to Banaras after years. Schoolchildren wandered through the galleries, university students photographed manuscripts and local residents rediscovered the Sabha.

Organised along with Banaras Hindu University’s Bharat Kala Bhavan, the ‘Pawas’ exhibition featured classical Indian paintings celebrating the monsoon. While the rain swept across the city; indoors, another monsoon unfolded through colour, memory and scholarship. For cultural journalist Pramod Kumar Pandey, the exhibitions represented something larger than careful curation. He says, “The ‘Pawas’ exhibition alongside the archives of Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi reminds us of Banaras' long tradition of intellectual rigour. We are witnessing a cultural inheritance being carefully stitched back together.”

At the centre of this revival stands poet and cultural theorist Vyomesh Shukla, the Sabha's pradhan mantri. “A city that forgets its grammar eventually loses its voice,” he says. “The revival of the Sabha is not merely about clearing dust from old manuscripts; it is about restoring the broken dialogue between our classical inheritance and the contemporary mind, ensuring that our vernacular traditions do not become footnotes in history.”

His words reveal the larger ambition behind the festival. This was not an exercise in nostalgia but an attempt to reconnect the Sabha with contemporary public life.

Where Music Met Manuscripts

If the mornings belonged to scholarship, the evenings belonged to the city. The Muktakashiya Manch became the cultural heartbeat. Kathak by Vishal Krishna, pakhawaj by Shivraj Ravindra Chavan and a recital by Pandit Sajan Mishra and Swaransh Mishra drew packed audiences despite persistent rain. The programme also included a lively batkahi session featuring the hugely popular Teen Taal team, Kamlesh Kishore Singh 'Tau', Asif Khan 'Khan Cha', Kuldeep Mishra 'Sardar' and Atul Tiwari; followed by dastangoi on Kashi aur Kabir by Himanshu Bajpai and Pragya Mishra, performances by the Wahane Sisters, The Aahwan Project, tabla recital by Soham Gorane, music by the Kashyap Brothers and a stirring finale by Prahlad Singh Tipaniya’s Kabir’s Nirgun and his ensemble.

Filmmakers Sudhir Mishra and Anubhav Sinha engaged students in a widely attended discussion on cinema and youth, signalling that the Sabha was no longer confined to manuscripts and literary history.

Poet Akriti Vigya Arpan, who travelled from Gorakhpur, found the experience highly symbolic. “Listening to Kabir beneath the monsoon sky while the rain drifted across the courtyard was deeply moving,” he says. “The Sabha has managed to reconnect a remarkable past with a restless present."

A New Generation Finds the Sabha

The most striking aspect of the festival was the presence of young people. Students crowded the galleries, attended discussions and participated in Main Hriday ki Baat, an open-mic platform that transformed the Sabha into a space of intergenerational dialogue. Khushboo Kumari, a research scholar in Hindi literature at BHU, says, “We have always read about the Sabha in textbooks. Walking through these galleries and seeing so many people here makes that history feel immediate.” Farhan, a Mass Communication student, says that the festival challenged conventional ideas about language itself. “We often associate Hindi only with classrooms or literature. Here we saw cinema, journalism, performance and digital media. It reminded us that language evolves with every generation.”

Deen Bandhu Tiwari, who has lived near Chowk for decades, watched the proceedings with quiet satisfaction. “Seeing these gates open again feels like watching a river flow after years of drought,” he says. “For us [local residents], the Sabha was never just another institution. It represented the intellectual life of Banaras.”

Beyond the Festival

Institutions weakened by years of neglect cannot be restored through a single festival. Yet, these four days demonstrated something equally significant: the city still believes the Sabha matters. As the celebrations concluded, Vyomesh Shukla returned to the larger question: “Our struggle is not against the passage of time, but against the erosion of cultural memory. The real triumph of this festival is that the Sabha has finally transformed into a living, breathing laboratory for what we can become.”

Banaras has always known that traditions survive not because they are preserved behind glass, but because every generation chooses to inhabit them anew. For four memorable days, the Nagari Pracharini Sabha ceased to be a silent monument to Hindi's past. It became, once again, a place where its future was being imagined.
