The technique evolved in response to the region’s demanding weather and seismic conditions, with the stone plinth raised above ground level to protect the structure from snow and groundwater. Its double-skinned walls contain an air gap filled with small stones, helping insulate interiors in winter and summer while allowing the structure to dissipate seismic forces. The structures require continued community care, with roots pruned, tied and guided as they develop. Families live on the upper floor, while the space below can accommodate poultry and livestock. Bamboo is central to the design because it is lightweight, flexible and readily available in Assam. Contemporary Chang Ghars have also adapted, with some using cement pillars and stronger wooden floors as Mising communities move away from traditional riverside settlements.Bhunga, KutchIn Kutch, the Bhunga addresses a different set of environmental pressures: extreme heat and seismic activity. These traditional circular mud houses use low, thick walls and lightweight roofs, with the cylindrical form helping distribute seismic forces and the earthen walls providing thermal insulation. The architecture also carries a strong cultural dimension. Bamboo and wood-supported roofs reduce structural load during seismic movement, while small openings help maintain structural integrity. Inside and outside, Bhungas can feature Lippan Kaam, a traditional mud-relief and mirror-work technique famous in Kutch and parts of Rajasthan.Nalukettu, KeralaThe Nalukettu evolved for a humid tropical climate. The traditional homestead consists of four halls arranged around a central open courtyard, or nadumuttam, which brings light and air into the house.
