Punjab FC officially announced on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, the signing of defender Bijoy Varghese from Inter Kashi for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season.
The 25-year-old centre back has committed to a contract with the Shers that will run until 2028, ensuring his presence in the club's defensive lineup for several seasons. This move marks a significant addition to the club as they prepare for the challenges of the new ISL campaign.
Bijoy Varghese's Journey: From Kerala Blasters To Inter Kashi
Varghese began his professional football journey by joining Kerala Blasters in the 2021-22 season, where he was an integral part of the squad that finished as runners-up.
Seeking further opportunities, he moved on loan to I-League franchise Inter Kashi in the 2023-24 season and made 10 appearances during the 2024-25 season, honing his skills in competitive play.
Varghese, born in Pulluvila—a coastal village in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala—watched his three older brothers excel in football, an experience that motivated him to embrace the sport.
He began his youth career with Kovalam FC before moving to the Sports Authority of India, representing Kerala at various youth levels. His standout performance at the Khelo India Youth Games in 2019 led to his recruitment by Kerala Blasters.
Varghese expressed his enthusiasm for the move by stating, "I'm really excited to be joining Punjab FC and looking forward to this new chapter in my career. There’s strong competition for defensive spots here in the club, which is great for my growth and will push me to give my best every day."
