The heated confrontation between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando during the Colombo Test has raised an obvious question: could either player face disciplinary action?
The answer depends on how match officials assess the incident under the ICC Code of Conduct, particularly whether the physical contact is judged intentional, aggressive, or merely part of a brief on-field confrontation.
What Does The ICC Code Say?
The key question is how the match referee interprets the physical contact. The ICC Code of Conduct is designed to deal with improper behaviour on the field and provides different levels of sanctions depending on the seriousness of the offence.
In this case, the relevant provision could be Article 2.12, which covers “inappropriate physical contact” with another player during an international match. Importantly, the footage and reports do not automatically establish that Jaiswal committed a deliberate “headbutt”.
Some descriptions of the incident suggest that the contact came as the players moved towards each other, while Jaiswal was still wearing his helmet. That distinction could be crucial when officials assess intent and severity.
Could Jaiswal Be Fined Or Banned?
Yes, disciplinary action is possible but a ban is not automatic. If match officials decide that Jaiswal deliberately initiated inappropriate physical contact, the incident could lead to a charge under the ICC Code of Conduct. Previous cases show that inappropriate contact has resulted in reprimands, fines and demerit points.
Virat Kohli, for example, was reprimanded and received a demerit point after inappropriate shoulder contact with South Africa's Beuran Hendricks in 2019.
The severity would ultimately depend on the match referee’s findings, including the nature of the contact, whether it was intentional and whether either player escalated the confrontation.
If officials view the incident as a more serious Level 2 breach, the consequences can include a fine of 50% to 100% of the match fee and suspension points. Under the ICC’s disciplinary system, accumulating four or more demerit points within a 24-month period can result in a suspension.
What About Asitha Fernando?
Any investigation would not necessarily focus on Jaiswal alone. Fernando's animated celebration and alleged remarks after taking the wicket could also be reviewed if match officials believe his conduct breached the Code. The available reports indicate that the confrontation followed Fernando’s dismissal of Jaiswal and a heated send-off, before the two players came together and teammates intervened.
That means the officials could examine the entire sequence, rather than simply the moment of physical contact.
So, Will ICC Punish Yashasvi Jaiswal?
As things stand, there is no confirmed ICC punishment announced for Jaiswal. The incident could be reviewed after the match, and the eventual outcome will depend on the match referee's interpretation of the footage and any reports from the on-field officials.
A fine or demerit points appear more plausible than immediately assuming a suspension, unless officials determine that the contact was deliberate and serious enough to warrant a higher-level charge. Equally, if the contact is judged incidental amid a confrontation involving both players, the punishment, if any, could be less severe.
