Facebook-owned WhatsApp sought to assuage users’ concerns over its new policy and terms of service, saying it does not affect the privacy of ­messages. It had informed how it proce­sses user data and partners with Facebook for ­integrations across the social media giant’s products. It said users have to agree to the new terms by February 8. Many shifted to Telegram and Signal.

Ten babies, aged 1-3 months, were killed in a fire in the Special Newborn Care Unit of Bhandara district hospital, Maharashtra, on January 9. The dead included the daughter of Hiralal and Hirkanya Bhanarkar, born after 14 years of marriage and three stillborn children. CM Uddhav Thackeray has ordered a probe.

India has told the UN Security Council that the practice of placing blocks and holds on requests to designate ­terrorists and terror groups must end, an apparent reference to China repeatedly blocking New Delhi’s bids to designate Pakistan-­based Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a ‘global terrorist’.
