The Indian embassy in Japan has swiftly responded to a 7.6 magnitude earthquake that rocked the Noto Peninsula on Japan's northwest coast, triggering a tsunami reaching certain regions. In the wake of this natural disaster on January 1, 2024, the embassy has established an emergency control room and released helpline numbers for Indian citizens affected by the event.

The consulate emphasized their ongoing coordination with local authorities and encouraged citizens to make use of the emergency helpline numbers provided. These include +81-80-3930-1715 (Mr. Yakub Topno), +81-70-1492-0049 (Mr. Ajay Sethi), +81-80-3214-4734 (Mr. D.N.Barnwal), +81-80-6229-5382 (Mr. S. The embassy underlined the importance of following directives from the local government and staying informed. The earthquake, which occurred on Monday morning, resulted in a significant tsunami threat along Japan's coast, with expected heights reaching up to five meters in certain areas.

Tsunami warnings issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) specifically targeted the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama. This marks the first issuance of major warnings since the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. A major tsunami warning indicates the potential for waves exceeding 3 meters. The Meteorological Department has also cautioned citizens to remain vigilant for the next two to three days, anticipating earthquakes with a seismic intensity of 7.
