Social media giant Twitter Inc faced a global outage on Wednesday as thousands of users reported that the site was down for them, according to downdetector.com.

Over 10,000 users reported issues with accessing the social media website in the United States as of 7:40 pm ET. Some users also complained that their Twitter notifications were not working.

According to downdetector.com, which tracks site traffic, the website became unavailable shortly before midnight GMT (11am Thursday AEDT, 7pm Wednesday EST), with outages most commonly reported on website rather than the app.

The London-based internet monitor NetBlocks said “Twitter is experiencing international outages affecting the mobile app and features including notifications”, reports The Guardian.

Many users reported that a message reading, "something went wrong, but don’t fret – it’s not your fault”, were being displayed for them.

Responding to the outage, Twitter giant Elon Musk tweeted "works for me".
