Mohanlal starrer L2: Empuraan, which was released on March 27, has now become the highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all time. It has beaten the lifetime collections of Manjummel Boys in nine days. Empuraan grossed over Rs 250 crore worldwide, surpassing the lifetime total of Manjummel Boys (Rs 241 crore).

As per a report in Sacnilk, Empuraan is the third highest-grossing Malayalam film in India after Prithviraj Sukumaran's Aadujeevitham aka The Goat Life (Rs 167.50 crore) and 2018 (Rs 110.50 crore).

On Day 12, on its second Monday, the film earned Rs 1.75 crore and entered the coveted Rs 100 crore club in India, by taking the total collections to Rs 100.10 crore.

Empuraan faced a severe backlash from Hindu groups, including members of the right-wing, over some certain scenes that allegedly referred to the 2002 anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat. The film was criticised for promoting 'anti-Hindu' ideology, which made the makers to voluntarily re-edit the film.

The re-edited version of Empuraan was released in theatres after 24 cuts. Reportedly, two minutes and eight seconds of footage were deleted after re-censoring.
