  • This is their sixth victory in the last seven games

  • Manish Pandey was awarded the player of the match award

Kolkata Knight Riders kept their IPL 2026 playoff dreams alive by pulling off a tense, four-wicket victory over arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in a low-scoring thriller at the Eden Gardens on May 20, Wednesday.

Opting to bowl first under sticky, overcast conditions, KKR’s bowling unit put on a absolute clinic, choking MI to a modest 147/8. Australian all-rounder Cameron Green (2/23) and rookie left-arm seamer Saurabh Dubey (2/34) tore through MI's heavyweight top order in a lethal powerplay display, combining beautifully to leave the visitors reeling at 41/4.

Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine choked the middle overs, causing severe rhythm issues for Tilak Varma, who crawled to a sluggish 20 off 32 balls. Despite a late, explosive cameo from unbeaten South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch (32), MI simply lacked the firepower to post a commanding total.

KKR’s chase started text-book rockily as they lost early wickets, courtesy of an aggressive opening spell from Jasprit Bumrah. The match also witnessed mid-game drama when Angkrish Raghuvanshi was subbed out following a nasty on-field collision, bringing in Tejasvi Singh as a concussion substitute.

However, veteran Manish Pandey—playing his first game of the season—anchored the tricky pursuit with a calm, calculated 45. He stitched together a vital 64-run partnership with Rovman Powell, who smashed a rapid 40. Despite a spectacular, viral one-handed airborne catch from Bosch to dismiss Powell, KKR held their nerve past midnight to cross the finish line.

With this crucial victory, KKR moves to 13 points, drawing level with Punjab Kings and leapfrogging them into a crucial position on the ladder due to a superior Net Run Rate. To officially secure a top-four playoff spot, KKR must win their final league match and rely on Rajasthan Royals or Chennai Super Kings stumbling in their respective remaining fixtures.
