December 26, 2024, hundreds of workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gathered outside the Coimbatore residence of their state president, Kuppusamy Annamalai. Alongside journalists, they witnessed an unusual and dramatic protest staged by the BJP leader over the sexual assault of a student at Anna University and what he described as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government’s inadequate response to the case. In a symbolic act of protest, Annamalai flogged himself six times before declaring that he would not wear footwear until the DMK was voted out of power.
