A mess worker from RPC doctors' canteen at AIIMS, New Delhi, died of Covid-19 because the hostel section refused to take precautionary measures, Resident Doctor's Association (RDA) of the hospital said on Friday.

The Hostel Superintendent tried to present the death as a probable "cardiac event", the RDA claimed.

The RDA said it had already demanded to put in place precautionary measures which were neglected by the hostel administration. The body had asked for regular screening and safety measures such as the provision of thermal scanner, sanitizer, masks etc. to "ensure mess workers are able to work safely without endangering themselves and the hospital staff", The RDA wrote in a letter to the Director of AIIMS Delhi.

After the mess worker's death, RDA has now demanded the resignation of both the Hostel Superintendent and Senior Warden after they take moral responsibility for the incident.

The RDA has sought appointment of a "more receptive and resident-friendly" hostel superintendent and senior warden.

The body has requested the AIIMS administration to provide compensation to the family of the mess worker who died.
