The petitioners also claimed the Rules went beyond the scope of the parent IT Act as well as the reasonable restrictions imposed on speech and expression by Article 19 (2) of the Constitution.
The Delhi HC expressed displeasure over the microblogging platform appointing a “contingent worker” as Chief Compliance Officer (CCO).
'The commitment is that I will not do anything till parliamentary law comes,' Senior Advocate Harish Salve, representing WhatsApp, told the court.
The court then proceeded to adjourn the pleas by The Wire, Quint Digital Media Ltd and Pravda Media Foundation till August 20.
The court was hearing a plea claiming non-compliance with the Centre's new IT Rules by the microblogging platform.
The Centre, in an affidavit filed in the high court, said any non-compliance amounts to breach of provisions of IT Rules, leading to Twitter losing its immunity conferred under the IT Act.
Under the new IT rules, large digital platforms have to publish periodic compliance reports every month.
The appointment comes a day after the resignation of Dharmendra Chatur, who was recently appointed as interim resident grievance officer for India by Twitter on May 31.
It leaves the microblogging site without a grievance official as mandated by the new IT rules
