England have named an unchanged playing XI for the second Test against India at Edgbaston, Birmingham, starting Wednesday, as they look to build on their 1-0 lead in the series.

Despite much anticipation around Jofra Archer’s comeback, the pacer was not included in the starting lineup, with the pace trio of Josh Tongue, Brydon Carse, and Chris Woakes set to continue leading the attack.

Archer, who was recalled to the Test squad for the first time since February 2021 after a string of injury setbacks, has had his return to the England dressing room temporarily delayed due to a family emergency.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Monday that the 29-year-old fast bowler did not join the squad for training but is expected to link up with the team on Tuesday.

“England Men’s fast bowler Jofra Archer will not be joining the England Test squad for today’s training session at Edgbaston… due to a family emergency,” the ECB said in a statement. “He is expected to rejoin the squad tomorrow, ahead of the Rothesay second Test.”

Archer’s inclusion in the squad had generated excitement after he featured for Sussex in their recent County Championship match against Durham — his first red-ball outing in four years — where he bowled 18 disciplined overs, taking 1 for 32.

However, with Archer still regaining full match fitness following his recovery from a finger injury, and given his prolonged absence due to elbow and back injuries, England have opted to stick with the attack that delivered success in the series opener.

Ben Stokes’ side will be aiming to extend their advantage in the series, while India will look to bounce back at a venue where England famously chased down 378 against them three years ago.
