UGC Declares 20 Universities As 'Fake', Says Degrees Awarded By Them Won't Be Recognised

The University Grants Commission has given a list of 20 universities which are not empowered to confer any degree because they are offering degrees contrary to the provisions of the UGC Act.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 20 universities as 'fake' and not empowered to confer any degree on Wednesday. Delhi has the highest number of such institutions on the list.

UGC secretary Manish Joshi reportedly said, "It has come to the notice of the UGC that a number of institutions are offering degrees in contrary to the provisions of the UGC Act. Degrees awarded by such universities shall neither be recognised nor valid for higher education or employment purpose. These universities are not empowered to confer any degree."

There are eight institutions in Delhi which have come under the list, according to UGC. They are:

1. All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences

2. Commercial University Ltd, Daryaganj

3. United Nations University

4. Vocational University

4. ADR-Centric Juridical University

5. Indian Institution of Science and Engineering

6. Viswakarma Open University for Self-Employment

8. Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University)

Uttar Pradesh has four such universities and they are

1. Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith

2. National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy

3. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open university)

4. Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad

UGC said that there are several other such universities in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Kerala.
