Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Wednesday that implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam while protecting tribal traditions will be a cornerstone of the BJP-led government's agenda if the party secures a third consecutive term in the upcoming state assembly elections.
Addressing a large public rally in Gogamukh, Dhemaji district, the Prime Minister framed the commitment as essential to preserving the state's unique identity and ensuring justice for women.
"Implementing the Uniform Civil Code in Assam and protecting the traditions of our tribal society, Sixth Schedule areas, or saving Assam's identity are very big announcements. The BJP does what it says," PM Modi stated. He emphasized that these measures are part of broader efforts to ensure the "dignity, respect, and safety" of women across the state.
In his address, the Prime Minister launched a sharp critique of the opposition Congress party, contrasting the BJP's tenure with what he described as the dark era of previous Congress governments. He alleged that the Congress party's agenda would harm Assam's indigenous communities and benefit "infiltrators".
"Congress leaders are openly saying that they will bring in a new law in Assam to protect infiltrators and are openly supporting them," PM Modi alleged, claiming the opposition's goal was to "turn the majority community into a minority and create a permanent vote bank". He accused the party of pursuing "divisive politics" and attempting to replicate a controversial communal violence bill first proposed by the UPA government before 2014.
