Another seeded player made a shock exit in the form of 15-seed Emma Navarro, who was sent packing by Magda Linette. The Pole won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Navarro, who came into the tournament as the 15th ranked player in the world, makes her earliest exit at the first major of the season in her career.

Sofia Kenin’s poor recent run at the Australian Open continued as she lost 6-3, 6-2 to fellow-American Peyton Stearns. Kenin, the No.27 seed, was a shock winner here in 2020, but has since struggled at Melbourne Park losing in the first round for the fifth consecutive time.

Matteo Berrettini, the Italian tennis star, has withdrawn from AO 2026 ahead of his first-round clash against Australian Alex de Minaur.

“I’m really sorry to have to withdraw from the tournament,” Berrettini said. “I have always enjoyed being and playing here and feeling your incredible support. Thank you to the tournament for their fantastic organisation and I hope to see all of you again very soon.”

Day 2 serves up yet another shocking upset as no. 7 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime has made a shock exit in the 1st round, losing to Nuno Borges. The Canadian, who had to retire, was trailing 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to the Portuguese tennis player.

“I feel for him,” Borges said of Auger-Aliassime. “I know how he feels to struggle physically and it is part of tennis. I hope he gets better quickly and back to his best level.

“It’s a great win for me either way. I thought I competed well. Maybe if he was 100 per cent, it would’ve been a different score, but I’m really happy to push through this one and get another opportunity on Wednesday.”

No 3 seed Coco Gauff has made light work of her opponent Kamilla Rakhimova with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the 1st round at the Rod Laver Arena.

No 11 seed Daniil Medvedev is currently in action on the Margaret Court Arena. He currently leads Jesper de Jong 7-3 in the first set.
