Sawan Barwal has added his name to the Asian Games marathon history books, winning silver with a new National Record of 2:11:37.

He is also the only Indian man to win an Asian Games marathon medal outside India, with all three previous Indian medallists claiming their medals in New Delhi.

Here’s a look at India’s previous marathon medallists at the Asian Games:

• 1951: Chhota Singh — Gold (2:42:58.6)

• 1951: Surat Singh Mathur — Bronze (2:53:49.8)

• 1982: Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan — Bronze (2:25:07)

This is absolutely wild! Sawan Barwal has just rewritten the Indian marathon record and powered his way to silver at the Asian Games.

Barwal clocked 2:11:37, smashing his own National Record by 21 seconds and setting a new personal best in the process. He stayed with the lead pack until around the 35km mark before making his move in the closing stages, opening up a gap over China’s Feng Peiyou in the final seven kilometres.

Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita held on for gold in 2:10:49, finishing 48 seconds ahead of Barwal, while Feng Peiyou took bronze in 2:12:13.

And there is history here too. Barwal becomes only the fourth Indian man to win an Asian Games medal in the marathon, following Chhota Singh, Surat Mathur and H K Seetharam. It is also India’s first marathon medal at the Asian Games since Seetharam’s bronze in 1982.

Kartik Karkera, the other Indian in the 19-man field, finished 17th in 2:22:41.
