It has been quite an attacking start from both sides, with Ukraine willing to throw caution to the wind when pushing forward. Krevsun had the first shot from a 30-yard free-kick, but it went high and wide. Karaman's long range effort minutes later is much better, stinging the palms of Fran, who makes a routine stop.

Despite Spain having more than 80% of the ball, Ukraine's pace is causing some trouble to their backline. Cuenca hacks down the onrsuhing Ponomarenko to prevent him from getting free, and earns the first yellow of the night.

Spain have been utterly dominant in the last ten minutes or so, and the relentless pressure on Krapyvtsov's goal bears fruit. It all comses from a short corner, and Pitarch finds Mendoza. The midfielder lobs it past the defenders to find Pablo Garcia on the right edge of the box, and his powerful shot beats the reach of the goalkeeper to find the back of the net.

Ukraine's tactics of sitting back deep and trying to hit Spain on the counter has not worked at all so far as the Spaniards have overloaded the midfield, cutting off any supply to their opposition forwards. Spain still have more than 75% of the ball, but the tempo has dropped a bit since the frantic start of the game.

After just a minute of stoppage time, the Moroccan referee blows his whistle to signal half-time. Spain have bossed the ball in the first half, but in terms of shots on target, there isn't much of a difference - Ukraine's one shot on target compared to Spain's two.

In fact, Ponomarenko had a great chance from inside the box after a free-kick, but his header went wide of the post. However, the only thing that counts is goals scored, and Garcia's strike has given La Rojita the lead at the break.

Both sets of players are out on the pitch, and the referee blows his whistle to signal the start of the second half. Ukraine get the half underway, and they have work to do to neutralise Spain's dominance in the first match.

Mykhaylenko had opted for a half-time substitution, bringing on Oleksandr Pyshchur in place of Ponomarenko.

A lobbed pass towards the Spanish box is misjudged by Cuenca, and it almost falls to substitute Pyshchur. However, the Ukrainian can't get a touch on the ball, and the danger is cleared before Derkach concedes a foul.

The game has stretched a little bit, with Ukraine taking more risks in attack. Vashchenko's strike earned them a corner, but Spain countered with pace, thought it came to nothing. A rash tackle from Kysil earned Spain a free-kick, and Garcia stung the palms of Krapyvstov with a long-range effort.

Meanwhile, Cuenca and Virgili comes off for Spain, and on comes Alvaro Cortes and David Mella.

Spain continue to dominate the ball, with three-fourths of the posession and three shots on target. Still, the lead is just 1-0, which is never enough in such an end-to-end contest. Ukraine, meanwhile, have tried to move forward, but are yet to have any shots on goal in the second half.

Both sides make changes. Spain bring on Peio Canales and Pau Navarro, and off come Fortea and the excellent Belaid. A couple of minutes later, Ukraine replace Vashchenko and Karaman with Bohdan Budko and Matviy Panchenko. Less than 10 minutes for the Ukrainians to find an equaliser.

Ukraine have brought on Dmytro Mykhaylenko in place of Derkach to get some height advantage in a last-ditch attempt to get the equaliser. The fourth official holds up his board and indicates a minimum of three minutes to be played - that's how long Ukraine have to break down the Spanish defence.

That was an exhilarating end to the match. Ukraine's corner was cleared by Spain, and Mendoza was played through in the counter. With just the goalkeeper to beat, Spain looked favourites to score, but Krapyvstov - way out of his box - put in an excellent tackle to steal the ball and clear the danger.

However, excellent defending and game management from the Spaniards, and they are through to the quarter-finals. Despair for the Ukrainians, many of whom are down on the turf in exhaustion after giving it their all.
