It's a sunny afternoon in Seville, and referee Alejandro Muniz blows his whistle. The hosts get today's match underway, with Barcelona dressed in their orange-pink third kit.
Despite recent history not being on their side, Sevilla have started the game in superb fashion, showing their attacking intent through their summer signing Alexis Sanchez - a former Barcelona player. The Chilean had an early chance to square the ball back for Vargas, but Szczesny was quick to cut it out.
The opening 10 minutes have flown by, and Barcelona have had just one-third of the ball - not something you hear often. Meanwhile, there are half-hearted shouts for a penalty as Romero went down under pressure from Araujo.
Calamity for Barcelona, as VAR asked referee Muniz to take a look at the incident on the pitch-side monitor. The tackle looked innocent enough in real time, but the referee takes a long hard look and points towards the spot.
Alexis Sanchez comes back to haunt his old side, finishing calmly from the spot to give the hosts an unexpected - but very well-deserved - lead. A confident run-up, and the Chilean sends Szczesny the wrong way.
Barcelona are really struggling to get a foothold in the match at the moment. Almost all of the attacking moves are coming from the hosts, with the Barca forwards looking clueless. Ferran Torres then decides to slide throgh through the legs of Agoume, earning a yellow card.
What a massive change for Sevilla to double their lead! Alexis showed excellent close control to make his way past a bunch of bodies into the box. He loses posession, but the ball falls into the path of Isaac Romero, and he stabs it towards the far corner. The ball rolls inches wide of the post.
Somehow, Sevilla fail to double their lead despite another terrific attacking move. A good through pass finds the run of Sow, who beats the offside trap and has a free-run at goal. The Swiss midfielder cuts inside and plays it to Romero, but the resulting shot is poor, and Szczesny makes a good safe. The goalkeeper has to make another good stop from the resulting corner, but the offside flag goes up.
Play resumes after the first cooling break in Seville. Manger Matias Almeyda was animated during the break, asking his side to "remember what they practiced". Right after resumption of play, Sevilla has another attacking move, with a ball from Sanchez finding Romero, but his shot is wide.
Fourth time lucky for Isaac Romero, and the Spaniard gets his name on the scoresheet. Kounde is weak in posession and is dispossesed in midfield, and Vargas is played through down the left flank. The Swiss winger puts on the afterburners before crossing it back across the face of the goal, and it's an easy tap-in for Romero at the end.
Barcelona are pushing hard to get at least one goal back, and Rashford had a chance to pull one back for Barcelona, Vlachodimos was alert and parries his shot behind. Meanwhile, the fourth official holds up his board and indicates a minimum of SIX minutes to be added on.
Barcelona have one back right before the break! The visitors are finally able to implement their high press, and it bears fruit as Pedri floats in a terrific ball from the right flank that finds Rashford unmarked in the box. A first-time shot from the Englishman, and it flies past the goalkeeper.
Referee Alejandro Muniz blows his whistle for half-time, and the hosts go into break 2-1 up. They would have gone two goals to the good, but Rashford pulled one back with the last kick of the half with a very good finish. Can the Blaugrana keep up their late surge in the upcoming half? A big half-time talk needed from Hansi Flick.
Both sets of players are out on the pitch, and the second half is underway. Two changes for Barcelona that I can see, with Eric Garcia and Alejandro Balde coming on. Araujo and Martin are off as Flick will likely shake up his lineup in search of an equaliser.
The second half is yet to pick up the high tempo of the first 45 minutes, and Romero gets a yellow card to his name for stamping on the left foot of Pedri. Barcelona, meanwhile, are enjoying much more of the ball than they saw in the first half.
A corner is floated into the box, and Marcao has shot while down on the pitch. It strikes the arm of Balde, and the hosts crowd the referee for a favourable result. However, referee Muniz is not impressed, and neither is VAR.
Time is running out for Barcelona to keep their unbeaten run in the league intact. Flick brings on Roony Bardghji in place of Ferran, possibly with the intention of providing more chances for Lewandowski - how has not had a lot of luck going forward today.
Bale is played down the left flank by Rashford, and is he brought down by Januzaj - who came on just moments ago - on the edge of the box. The referee immediately blows his whistle and points for a penalty! Rashford and Lewandowski stand near the penalty area, but it's the Pole who will take the kick.
Lewandowski takes a stuttering run up, but his shot goes wide of the left post! Massive, massive let-off for Sevilla.
A big chance for Barcelona to equalise as Roony weaved his way into the box after a one-two with Lewandowski. But having done the hard bit, with no one but the goalkeeper in front of him, the Swede hits it straight at Vlachodimos, who grabs on to it gratefully.
And that's surely that for Barcelona!! Moments after Akor Adams saw his goal ruled out for the tightest of offsides, Sevilla finally get the all-important third goal. Januzaj did well to win posession and play it to Agoume, who opted to free Carmona down the right flank. The full-back ran with the ball and, instead of cutting it back for Adams, has a shot that beats Szczesny and finds the far corner.
Meanwhile, a minumum of eight minutes to be played on a the end of the regulation ninety minutes.
Out of nowehere, Sevilla find themselves a man down as Gerard 'Peque' Fernandez sees a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Eric Garcia. He went down with his studs showing, and the referee has his hands tied as he gives the Sevilla player his marching orders. There is a VAR check going on.
Everything is falling Sevilla's way tonight, as VAR asks Alejandro Muniz to take a look on the pitch side monitor. The referee overturns his decision and shows a yellow to Peque instead.
This is quickly turning into a rout at the very end, as Sevilla hit Barcelona with a lethal counter attacking move. Euke found himself with acres of space down the left flank, and the Nigerian substitute cut back across the face of goal to find Adams, who knocks it past Szczesny with ease.
The full time whistle is blown at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, and it has been a horrible day out for the Blaugrana players in Seville. Everything went against them, including the contentious penalty decision against Araujo. Lewandowski skying his own spot kick did not help, and the hosts also saw Peque's red being downgraded to a yellow after VAR intervention.
As a result, Real Madrid remain top of La Liga, and Barcelona suffer their first league defeat of the 2025-26 season.
