Quetta Gladiators have won the toss and have opted to bat first today.
Explaining the decision, QG captain Saud Shakeel said, "We'll bat first. It's a new day, it's a good pitch and it might slow down as the game progresses. We didn't play our best cricket in the last game. We'll be looking at 200."
Quetta Gladiators: Saud Shakeel (c), Shamyl Hussain, Khawaja Nafay, Rilee Rossouw, Hasan Nawaz, Ben McDermott (wk), Tom Curran, Ahmed Daniyal, Alzarri Joseph, Abrar Ahmed, Usman Tariq.
Hyderabad Kingsmen: Saim Ayub, Usman Khan (wk), Marnus Labuschagne (c), Irfan Khan, Maaz Sadaqat, Hassan Khan, Hammad Azam, Riley Meredith, Maheesh Theekshana, Akif Javed, Mohammad Ali.
Quetta Gladiators lose their first wicket in the second over. Shamyl Hussain has looked the more dangerous batter and he was taking on both Maheesh Theekshana and Riley Meredith. Saud Shakeel wanted to join in but in his case, the pull shot off Meredith took a top edge. Hammad Azam settled and took a good catch. Shamyl is looking good and the Gladiators will hope that he plays long and deep.
Riley Meredith looks in really great rhythm as he bowls a tight over and gets the Kingsmen another breakthrough. Sticks to his strength, the hard length and Rilee Rossouw gets beaten by the pace and bounce. His attempt to hack the ball down the ground faulters and the mistimed ball gently lobs to Marnus Labuschagne. He completes the remainder of the over cheaply. Gladiators in pressure now.
After a strong start in the first two overs, the Quetta Gladiators have found it difficult to go hard in the remaining overs of the powerplay. They have lost two wickets and both Riley Meredith and Maheesh Theekshana have bowled well. Shamyl started explosively but he had to curb his instincts due to the situation. They have played out the powerplay but will have to accelerate soon to get some momentum.
The Hyderabad Kingsmen bowlers were keeping things tight for Gladiators and they were looking to find a release. Finally Marnus Labuschagne makes a few mistakes in his own over and Hasan Nawaz finds two sixes in two overs to get out of the pressure for some time. The partnership has been slowly growing between him and Shamyl and they will now look to change gears.
Shamyl Hussain has played a matured knock and prevented a collapse for Quetta Gladiators. He started on high tempo but slowed down once wickets started tumbling. Kept rotating the strike and took the game deep. Finally, after seeing left-arm spinner Hassan Khan bowling to him, he opens up again and launches him in the stands with two massive hits. At the same time, he completes his half-century as well.
Three wickets lost in no time for Quetta Gladiators and they are in trouble entering the final four overs. Maheesh Theekshana was the first to strike as he scalped two wickets in one over, removing Khawaja Nafay and Ben McDermott in consecutive deliveries. In the next over, Tom Curran and set Hasan Nawaz get into a horrible mix up and the later lose his wicket due to run out. They will have to make use of the last 24 deliveries to put up a competitive score.
Taking the responsibility of the run out on his shoulders, Tom Curran has shown his power. He has collected boundaries against both Saim Ayub and Rilee Meredith and ticked the scoreboard. He had a particular liking against Meredith as he scalped two sixes of his over. He will need to keep it up for another over to guide the Gladiators to a competitive total.
Things didn't go the way Gladiators planned in the last over. Tom Curran found Saim Ayub in the deep mid-wicket region and the latter took a great diving catch to send him back. Curran was the one who was playing a dangerous cameo. Next ball, Alzarri Joseph miscues a big shot and gets caught. Although Abrar Ahmed found two boundaries, the run still felt like just around par score for the wicket. Kingsmen will be happy with their effort. Gladiators will have to turn up with a solid bowling performance to defend this score.
Two overs and two wickets for the Quetta Gladiators. Hyderabad Kingsmen face the heat and realise, the wicket is not so easy for batting. Alzarri Joseph's first over was expensive but Saim Ayub nicked one while trying to steer it on the off-side. Marnus Labuschagne comes in and hits back-to-back fours. Next over, Abrar Ahmed bowls a flighted delivery to Sadaqat and his eyes lit up. Goes for the hoick but only finds the mid-wicket fielder in the deep. Kingsmen are in pressure just in the second over.
Bowlers dominate the powerplay as Hyderabad Kingsmen are left collecting scraps. Gladiators scalp three wickets and that has caused the Kingsmen to drop anchor and slow down. Usman Khan was looking the better one but Abrar Ahmed struck again, having him caught behind. Usman wanted to make room and cut him on the off-side but could only get a nick. Marnus Labuschagne stay stranded at one end and is joined by Saad Ali.
Usman Tariq gets the ball at a point when he likes to and strikes in his first over. A team, losing wickets upfront, searching for a release and there comes Tariq to keep things tight. Bowls a tricky over and Saad Ali goes for the big shot in the last ball. Doesn't get the entire contact of the bat on the ball and gets caught in the deep mid-wicket. Kingsmen are now struggling hard.
Irfan Niyazi and Hassan Khan are out on the crease after Marnus Labuschagne departed following dismissal to Saud Shakeel. With no options in hand, they have dropped the anchor and are trying to take the game deep with occasional boundaries. The asking rate has seen a steep rise and it is already over 12. Kingsmen will need some big overs to stay alive in the chase.
Only three overs remain and Hyderabad Kingsmen are left with more than 50 runs to chase. The equation is getting further difficult with every over and Irfan Niyazi is the loan set batter out on the crease. Hassan Khan was looking good but he was dismissed by a stunning grab from Ben McDermott. Tried to pull a slower bouncer, got a tickle and the ball was grab one-handed by a leaping McDermott. Gladiators can sense a victory here.
Quetta Gladiators secure their first victory of the season as they defeat Hyderabad Kingsmen by 40 runs. It was a comfortable victory in the end for Saud Shakeel's side while Marnus Labuschagne and co are handed their second defeat of the season. Batting first, it looked like Gladiators ended up with a low score but their bowlers stepped up, led by Abrar Ahmed and were able to restrict Kingsmen for only 134. Shamyl Hussain and Hasan Nawaz shined with the bat.
