Referee Natalie Simon has blown her whistle, and we are officially underway! The atmosphere is electric as both sides look to stamp their authority on the match from the opening minute.
England have started on the front foot in Tampa, looking to break the deadlock early against the All Whites. Marcus Rashford showed great vision to pick out Jordan Henderson on the edge of the box, but after taking a touch to set himself up for a curling effort toward the far corner, Henderson saw his goal-bound strike heartbreakingly deflect off his own teammate, Morgan Rogers. It was a golden opportunity wasted, and New Zealand somehow manage to survive the scare!
England continue to pile on the pressure in Tampa! Ollie Watkins showcased his vision, picking out his club teammate Morgan Rogers just outside the New Zealand penalty area. Rogers opted to go for goal himself, connecting cleanly with his left foot, but he got a little too much under the ball, sending his strike sailing high over the crossbar and into the stands. New Zealand breathe a sigh of relief as the search for an opener goes on!
A massive opportunity for New Zealand, and Jordan Pickford had to be at his very best to keep them out! Matthew Garbett has been the standout performer for the All Whites tonight, and he showed exactly why there, skipping past Marc Guéhi with poise before driving purposefully toward the edge of the box. He looked to curl a clinical strike into the far corner, but Pickford was equal to the task, watching the flight of the ball all the way and diving low to firmly palm it away. It’s a huge wake-up call for England, and a brilliant moment of quality from Garbett!
England are knocking on the door again! Marcus Rashford, a constant menace down the left flank, skipped past his marker before delivering a pinpoint cross toward the back post for Harry Kane. The striker connected well, looking to steer his effort under the crossbar, but New Zealand goalkeeper Max Crocombe showed lightning-quick reactions to tip the ball over the woodwork. England have a corner, and the pressure is intensifying in Tampa!
GOAL! England break the deadlock in stoppage time! Just when it seemed New Zealand would hold firm until the break, Harry Kane finally finds the breakthrough. Djed Spence, who has been a standout performer throughout this opening half, whipped in a beautiful, inviting ball from the flank that found Kane perfectly. The England captain rose to meet it, guiding a deft header into the far bottom corner with clinical precision. It is a deserved lead for the Three Lions, and a fantastic piece of play to cap off a persistent first-half effort! England 1–0 New Zealand.
England head into the break with a narrow lead, finally breaking the deadlock in stoppage time through a clinical Harry Kane header. It was a deserved advantage for the Three Lions, largely orchestrated by the relentless delivery of Djed Spence on the flank. While New Zealand managed to threaten through a moment of individual brilliance from Matthew Garbett—which forced a top-tier save from Jordan Pickford—the visitors have spent much of the half weathering a storm of English pressure. England will look to build on this momentum, while the All Whites must find a way to sharpen their counter-attacking threat if they are to mount a comeback in the second half.
England are agonisingly close to doubling their advantage! A corner from James found O'Reilly at the back post, who sliced an attempt with his left foot that looped high into the air. Dan Burn rose highest to meet the dropping ball, showing great determination to outjump everyone, but his header clipped the outside of the post and went behind for a goal-kick. It was a golden opportunity for Burn to bag his first-ever goal for England!
England are calling for a spot-kick, and for a split second, it looked like they had it! Ivan Toney went down under a heavy challenge from Garbett, and the referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot. However, the celebrations are cut short instantly—the linesman on the far side has his flag raised, signaling an earlier offside against Toney. The referee confers and quickly rescinds the penalty decision, awarding a free-kick to New Zealand instead. A massive reprieve for the All Whites, who survive a very close call!
England are turning up the heat again! Anderson whipped a brilliant, driven ball into the feet of Ngumoha right on the edge of the New Zealand box. The 17-year-old looked to thread a precise pass through for Ivan Toney, but the weight was just slightly too heavy, and the ball bobbled through to the waiting arms of a relieved Max Crocombe. A promising attacking move, but New Zealand survive the pressure for now!
England are piling on the pressure! Rio Ngumoha wins yet another corner for the Three Lions, and James delivers a teasing ball right onto the head of Dan Burn. The defender rose emphatically again, hunting for that elusive first England goal, but his header took a deflection and went behind for another corner. This time, however, New Zealand held firm, clearing the set-piece comfortably to alleviate the immediate danger.
England have finally registered their first shot on target of the second half! Anderson did well to slip a clever ball out to Anthony Gordon on the left flank, who drove forward before cutting inside to unleash a right-footed strike. It was a solid effort, but it lacked the power to trouble Alex Paulsen, who moved well to gather the ball comfortably. The Three Lions are pushing to extend their lead, but New Zealand remains resolute in defense.
A golden opportunity for England goes begging! Ivan Toney has somehow missed a sitter, failing to capitalize on a pinpoint delivery into the box from James. The striker made contact with the ball, but his commitment to the volley was lacking, and he could only watch as his right-footed effort bobbled harmlessly wide of the target. While the offside flag ultimately spared him further embarrassment, it was a lackluster finish that really should have been tucked away—Toney will know he has to be much sharper in those positions.
England kicked off their 2026 campaign with a well-deserved 1-0 victory over New Zealand at Raymond James Stadium in Florida. The Three Lions controlled proceedings throughout, eventually breaking the deadlock in first-half stoppage time when Harry Kane expertly headed home a pinpoint cross from Djed Spence.
The win marks a significant milestone for Thomas Tuchel, who has now recorded 10 victories in just 13 matches as England manager. He joins an elite group, becoming one of the fastest coaches to reach double-digit wins with the national team, sitting just behind Glenn Hoddle’s record of 12 games.
England’s dominance was reflected in the statistics, with the team accumulating 1.49 xG compared to New Zealand’s mere 0.12. While the scoreline remained narrow, the performance was a statement of intent as Tuchel’s side now turns its focus to Wednesday's final warm-up match against Costa Rica ahead of the World Cup. New Zealand, meanwhile, will now look ahead to their Group G opener against Iran next Tuesday.
