In a contest that redefined high-scoring thrillers, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) successfully chased down a massive target of 229 to defeat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by five wickets at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Saturday.
While the evening was headlined by a historic century from 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, it was the collective power of the SRH batting order that eventually stole the points.
Sent in to bat first, the Rajasthan Royals got off to a sensational start thanks to Sooryavanshi. The young opener played a knock for the ages, smashing 103 runs off just 37 balls. His century, reached in 36 deliveries, featured 12 towering sixes and sent the Jaipur crowd into a frenzy.
Supported by a disciplined 51 from Dhruv Jurel, the Royals posted an imposing 228/6 in their 20 overs. SRH captain Pat Cummins was the pick of the bowlers in a difficult outing, finishing with figures of 1/27.
The run chase began with Sunrisers Hyderabad showing zero signs of intimidation. Openers Abhishek Sharma (57 off 29) and Ishan Kishan tore into the Royals' attack from the first over. Kishan, in particular, was in sublime touch, scoring a blistering 74 off 31 balls to keep the required rate well under control.
Their century stand provided the perfect platform for the middle order to navigate the later stages of the chase.
Despite a brief scare where Jofra Archer and Brijesh Sharma picked up two wickets each to slow the momentum, Nitish Kumar Reddy (36) and Heinrich Klaasen (29) remained calm. After their dismissal, Salil Arora finished the game in style, guiding SRH to 229/5 with nine balls to spare
This victory marks one of the highest successful chases in IPL history and solidifies SRH’s position in the top four, while the Royals will be left to rue a bowling performance that failed to defend a record-breaking total.
Riyan Parag: We were looking to do that as well. But in the last couple of seasons we have not done well chasing, no problems batting first. We know the wicket really well, we had our camp here. There might be dew but it won’t be too much. Last year we fell short by a couple of overs, just want to put up a collective 40 overs. The middle order has to step up, along with the others.
Pat Cummins: We are going to have a bowl first. The wicket looks good, so we will try and see what we have to chase down. I feel really fresh, it has been a while, I have had good preparation and my body feels well. He’s fantastic, four wins in the first seven games, and he played that SRH game in a bold, fearless style of cricket. We know the pitch really well in Hyderabad, but this is the first game here for both teams, so it will be a challenge. I come in for Madushanka.
